This was the daily reality for Jose Acevedo, a beloved crossing guard in Bristol Borough. After nearly a decade of service, Acevedo has retired, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and a plea for drivers to be more mindful.
The Bristol Borough Council paid tribute to Acevedo's extraordinary commitment, presenting him with a formal proclamation. His journey as a crossing guard began on September 26, 2016, and continued until December 8, 2025. During this time, he bravely navigated the intersection of Buckley and Beaver streets, managing three crossing points for students arriving from different directions.
"He was a constant presence at that tough corner," said Chief of Police Joe Moors. "Jose had to keep an eye on children crossing from three locations, and unfortunately, not all drivers respect school zones."
Acevedo's decision to retire was a difficult one. He admitted that the cold weather was taking a toll on his health, but his love for the children and the community was evident.
"I've had the privilege of guiding so many wonderful kids," Acevedo shared. "It was a tough choice, but my health had to come first. I miss the kids, the parents, and the sense of community."
But here's where it gets controversial... Acevedo highlighted a disturbing trend in driver behavior. He cited national statistics, revealing that between 1993 and 2008, 120 crossing guards lost their lives on duty, an average of eight fatalities per year. He attributed this danger to distracted and aggressive drivers, a concern echoed by many crossing guards across the country.
"In recent years, some drivers have become increasingly aggressive," Acevedo explained. "They don't stop completely, they creep forward, and it's a real danger."
While expressing gratitude for the support of the local police department, Acevedo's final words were a plea to all drivers:
"Imagine those children as your own. Treat them with the care and respect you would want for your kids."
