This has a ripple effect on other goods, including food, which has seen a 3.1% national cost increase in the past year. The situation is dire for local food banks and pantries, which are struggling to keep up with the rising costs of goods and utilities. South County Assistance Network, for instance, has seen a significant increase in the number of families seeking their assistance, from 371 in 2025 to 47 new families this year. This trend is expected to continue as more people seek food assistance, often for the first time. The challenge is exacerbated by the fact that wages are not keeping up with the high cost of living. To address this, state lawmakers can advocate for increasing the minimum wage and investing in public transportation, affordable housing, and childcare. However, the most significant improvements in affordability will likely come from federal government actions, such as ending the war in Iran and repealing cuts to programs like Medicaid and federal food assistance.
