This week, our weather will be anything but boring as a series of clipper systems dance across the Great Lakes. We're talking a real transitional period, where things might change on a dime. Eastern areas will see some light snow this morning, followed by a brief calm. But that tranquility is fleeting, because a major cold front is barreling our way, set to arrive Tuesday night. Prepare for lake-effect snow and a sharp drop in temperatures that will stick around for the rest of the workweek.
Let's break down the next few days:
Monday will be consistently cloudy, and temperatures will struggle to climb anywhere near 0°C. Expect southwest winds around 15km/h, with gusts up to 25km/h in the morning. These winds should gradually ease off as high pressure builds in from the south. Overnight, temperatures will drop to around -3°C under mostly cloudy skies, with winds becoming calm.
Tuesday is where things get interesting (and potentially slippery!). The northern edge of a clipper system moving across southern Ontario will bring mixed precipitation to our area. The real challenge will be the morning, specifically between 6-9am, when temperatures will hover right around the freezing mark. This could lead to freezing drizzle or light freezing rain, making for hazardous travel conditions until the surface temperatures finally rise above zero. And this is the part most people miss... there could also be fog and freezing fog during the early to mid-morning hours, thanks to increased moisture in the air. As the day warms slightly, that mixture of snow and freezing rain might transition to just rain, though I personally think we're more likely to see snow. Expect 2-4cm of snow before if there's a changeover to rain. But, a strong cold front will sweep through in the evening, putting an abrupt end to the mild conditions.
Wednesday will feel like a completely different season. Arctic air will flood in behind Tuesday's cold front, causing a dramatic plunge in temperatures. Highs will struggle to reach -12°C, and overnight lows will plummet to -15°C. Brace yourselves for lake-effect snow, with potentially 5-10cm accumulating throughout the day.
And finally, Thursday... The good news is that the squalls should weaken, and we might even see some sunshine! The bad news? Daytime highs will again struggle to reach -12°C. But wait, there's more! Another clipper system arrives at the end of the week, bringing another dusting of snow and, thankfully, slightly warmer air.
