A battle for the greens: The Trump administration faces legal action over its plans to transform a historic public golf course in Washington, D.C.

To halt the proposed changes to the East Potomac Golf Course, a beloved part of Washington's recreational landscape.
But here's where it gets controversial: Late last year, the Trump administration canceled a lease held by the National Links Trust, which had been overseeing three public golf courses in the city. This move opened the door for Trump to leave his mark on these public spaces.
The Interior Department, led by Trump, claimed they were terminating the 50-year lease granted to the National Links Trust in 2020, citing allegations of non-payment of rent and lack of investment in the properties. However, the Trust disputed these claims, stating that they had fulfilled their lease obligations and that the Interior Department had provided little clarity on the matter.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, argues that the Trump administration's plans for the East Potomac Park, which includes the golf course, violate a congressional act from 1897. This act states that the park should be "forever held and used as a park for the recreation and pleasure of the people."
The Interior Department, when approached for comment, stated that they do not discuss pending litigation. However, they added that they would ensure the golf courses remain "safe, beautiful, open, affordable, enjoyable, and accessible" for visitors to Washington.
The lawsuit names the Interior Department and the National Park Service as defendants. It alleges that the Trump administration's actions not only violate environmental laws but also threaten to pollute a park that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
